Self-Designed Major in Anthropology
In Fall 2008, our department helped a student successfully propose a self-designed major in cultural anthropology. Students interested in self-designed majors are encouraged to make an appointment with the department chair and to visit the TCNJ website on self-designed majors.
Although self-designed majors are intended to allow students great flexibility in pursuing their interests, our department suggests the following core of six courses for students who wish to pursue a self-designed major in anthropology:
- ANT 110: Introduction to Cultural Anthropology
- ANT 111: Introduction to Physical Anthropology
- SOC 301: Socio-Cultural Theory
- ANT 401: Urban Ethnography or ANT 390: Research Course in Anthropology or SOC 404: Qualitative Interviewing and Analysis
- ANT 495: Two semester sequence of Senior Thesis in Anthropology
The remaining six or more courses in the self-designed major in anthropology should be tailored to the student's specific interest.
Students pursuing a self-designed major in anthropology are also STRONGLY encouraged to pursue a foreign language minor and to plan to study abroad for at least one semester.
