General Sociology Major

No more than two (2) courses toward the major may be taken at other institutions.

Core Requirements

SOC101 - Introduction to Sociology (or HON216 - The Sociological Perspective)

Sociology explores the intersection of biography and history.  How do culture, class, race, sex, family, medicine, business, religion, education, and government affect our lives?  Special attention is paid to the impact of society on self.

SOC301 - Development of Socio-Cultural Theory

Prerequisites: SOC101 or HON216
The response of social theorists to the consequences of the industrial revolution and the issues of capitalism, secularism, industrialism, and modern conciousness and critical enterprise seen through the work of theorists such as Marx, Durkheim, and Weber.

SOC302 - Quantitative Research Methods

Prerequisites: STA115 or STA215; SOC101 or HON216
Use of computer systems designed for data analysis.  Theory and practice of computer-assisted data manipulation using available software for social science data.  Major student research project required.

SOC499 - Senior Seminar in Sociology

Prerequisites: SOC301, SOC302, and the Tutorial
Culminating experience for department majors.  Course draws on skills and knowledge of departmental courses as well as knowledge gained from the liberal arts broadly construed.  Requires significant internship or senior thesis project.Sociology Options (Choose 6)
