Visions in Action is a small nonprofit organization committed to social change in Africa and Latin America through grassroots volunteer efforts. The organization offers the opportunity to take responsibility for a project in the intern's area of interest, which will enable an intern to gain valuable skills that can aid future endeavors. Visions in Action does not offer a stipend for the efforts of an intern.
In selecting interns, they look for relevant experience and seriousness of commitment, based on the length of service and weekly time commitment proposed. Graduate students and seniors are favored over sophomores and juniors, other qualifications being equal. Nationals of the developing world are especially encouraged to apply. Many interns volunteer at Visions while working at another job. Their hours are flexible, Monday through Friday, 9:00AM to 5:00PM. If you are coming out of town, they can direct you to resources for finding housing and a part-time job. In addition, when you complete the three month internship, you will receive a $1,000 credit toward the Visions in Action program fee should you decide to participate in their volunteer program in Africa or Mexico. There are ten intern positions available in a continuous basis, each requiring a commitment of three months or more for 15-40 hours per week:
International Administrative Intern
Requirements: interest in nonprofit organizations and international development; strong phone skills, database experience helpful
Duties: assists staff with office administration, visas, applicant processing
Public Relations Intern
Requirements: experience in public relations, media relations, marketing or advertising; strong writing and design skills, desktop publishing experience is a plus
Duties: develop and implement public relations and recruitment campaign, including radio and newspaper ads, PSAs, bulk mailing
Fundraising Intern
Requirements: research, writing and editing skills, strong communications, networking skills
Duties: assist director with fundraising activities, research foundations and corporations, write proposals, develop membership base and individual donors
Activism Intern
Requirements: strong commitment to social justice and human rights
Duties: organize and participate in rallies involving international human rights issues, attend hearings on Capitol Hill and elsewhere, outline and write about recommended actions
Recruitment Intern
Requirements: creative, outgoing personality, organizational skills; strong phone skills, use of a car required
Duties: develop and implement recruitment campaign with staff, frequent travel, tabling and presentations at Mid Atlantic campuses
Newsletter Intern
Requirements: experience in desktop publishing (Pagemaker, Illustrator); strong writing and layout skills
Duties: desktop publishing, artwork, graphics, writing, interviewing
Research Intern
Requirements: knowledge of international development, specifically Africa; research, writing, database and library skills
Duties: research international organizations, help produce guides; assess development needs overseas for the purpose of expansion
Internet Intern
Requirements: Internet experience, HTML coding
Duties: update website, manage list-serve, create links, e-mail newsletter
Finance Intern
Requirements: accounting and spreadsheet experience, business degree a plus
Duties: international accounting, overseas budget analysis, taxes
Special Projects Intern
Requirements: experience with organizing and publicizing events
Duties: coordinate conferences, fundraisers, dinners, sporting events
