The Institute for Experiential Learning (IEL) is Washington's premier internship program. For the past 14 years, IEL has been a leader in the field of experiential education, providing students with real world experience while challenging them through the theoretical reflection and academic coursework. Students in IEL's Capital Experience program have interned at a wide variety of organizations in the Nation's Capital, from the White House and Capitol Hill to investment banking firms and nonprofit organizations. In each case, it is our desire to provide focused learning, both at work and in the classroom, tailored to the goals of each student.
IEL students intern four days per week and attend academic seminars the fifth day. All students are required to develop a learning plan, in which students identify the skills and knowledge they hope to obtain during their semester in Washington. Our faculty have earned doctorates, have held faculty rank and have many years of experience in higher education. IEL also offers the Embassy and Diplomatic Scholars program for students interested in international affairs. This program places students in international organizations, embassies, and government agencies. Students attend academic seminars that focus on issues related to their field of choice.
