Young
Scholar's Institute is seeking highly motivated college students with a
commitment to serving urban children. All internships are paid positions
offering competitive salaries. Young Scholar's Institute (YSI) is
a non-profit learning center that serves Trenton-area children. Each
year YSI provides academic, cultural, and recreational activities for over
3,000 students in grades K-12. Through programs such as one-to-one
tutoring, study hall, SAT preparatory courses, enrichment classes, college
tours and admissions workshops, Young Scholar's Institute strengthens
the basic skills necessary for students to excel academically and to pursue
higher education.
A sociology
intern at YSI could have the opportunity to develop a better understanding
of urban children and families along with issues related to urban education.
He/she could also have the opportunity to develop programs or components
of programs to address identified issues and to conduct research. Internships are available
in the following areas: 1) Administrative Intern to assist with the
after school and Saturday programs; 2) After School Enrichment Program
(ASEP); and 3) Intern for the Summer Enrichment Program.
The Administrative
Intern would assist with YSI's after school and Saturday programs, Monday
through Thursday 3:30pm-8:30pm and Saturday 9:00am-1:00pm. In addition
to monitoring student attendance, the intern would be assigned special
projects, including contacting parents about YSI events, compiling data
for program evaluations, and researching scholarship opportunities.
The Administrative Intern position is available all three terms.
During the Fall and Spring, the intern would work Monday through Thursday
and Saturday. During the Summer, he/she would work Monday through
Friday. This
position requires excellent writing and listening skills, as well as the
ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds. Research and
computer skills are highly desirable and would be utilized in this position.
The purpose
of the After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) is to provide academic enrichment
and recreational activities after school for 15 hours per week (between 3:00pm and 6:00pm,
Monday - Friday) at $10.00 per hour to
students (K-5) who attend Trenton Community Charter School (TCCS).
Thirty-five students participate in this program. An intern for ASEP
would assist with planning and teaching/implementing the after school classes
and activities for the TCCS students. The ASEP position is available
in the Fall and Spring, Monday through Friday.
After School Enrichment Program Begins Oct. 4, 2004
The Summer
Enrichment Program is a six week program that provides academic enrichment
classes in the mornings and recreational and cultural activities in the
afternoon. Approximately eighty students in grades 4 through 10 attend
this program. Interns for this program serve as teaching assistants
for morning academic classes (in Math, English, Science or Computer Science)
and as group leaders for recreational activities in the afternoons.
Interns have the opportunity to plan lessons, lead class instruction, or
lead recreational activities. The Summer Intern for the Summer Enrichment
Program would work Monday through Friday. Interns for both the After
School Enrichment Program and the Summer Enrichment Program would need
excellent listening skills, creativity, and the ability to related to elementary
age children from diverse backgrounds. Summer Enrichment Program
interns also need to demonstrate academic strength and interest in at least
one of the target subject areas (i.e. Math, English, Science or Computer
Science).
If you
are interested in any of these internships, please contact Letilla B. Chapman,
Associate Director at (609) 393-3220.
