The Center for Hispanic Policy, Research and Development (CHPRD) was created in 1975 by executive order to address the needs of the Hispanic community.  The mission of this organization is to empower the Hispanic community in New Jersey through the process of inclusion in policy development and direct social services.

CHPRD is located within the State Department of Community Affairs is pleased to announce two different paid internship opportunities for Latino college students: a general intern position and many positions in their Hispanic Interns in Community Service summer program.

The general intern position is open to a Latino college student who is preferably bilingual (Spanish/English) and has transportation to the CHPRD's office in downtown Trenton.  The intern will be responsible for conducting interviews and writing articles for MATICES, the CHPRD's quarterly newsletter, for drafting editing and working with the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) graphic artist in publishing the newsletter.  Additionally, the intern will assist in the development and implementation of the Hispanic Interns in Community Service and Latino Leaders Fellowship Institute Alumni Association,  the CHPRD's resource library, and assist the staff with other job functions.  This position pays $10/hr.  Interested parties should send a resume to the contact listed above.

The Hispanic Interns in Community Service Program is a 10-week summer program that strives to expose Hispanic college students to career opportunities in state government, or other areas of public service, while allowing them to develop and strengthen their professional skills in a conducive working environment.  The Latino Leaders Fellowship Institute strives to develop and cultivate the leadership skills of the interns through weekly intensive training sessions.  It complements the employment component by providing a greater opportunity for leadership development.  Interns will be required to complete an individual course project throughout the ten weeks.  Interns who successfully complete the required course project are eligible to gain credits at their college/university.

Interns are selected on the basis of their overall grade point average and class standing.  In the past, priority has been given to students with a junior or senior class standing with a grade point average of 3.0 or above (special consideration will be given to applicants with grade point averages below 3.0).  Interns are placed according to job description and requirements submitted by potential sites.  Each qualifying applicant is interviewed by the CHPRD and applications are screened carefully to assure a quality match of employer and employee.

A stipend of $3,000 is provided for this ten week program.  Students must work 28 hours at a placement site and attend weekly training sessions consisting of seven hours.  The 2006 Hispanic Interns in Community Service Program and Latino Leaders Fellowship Institute will begin on June 5, 2006 and end on August 11, 2006.  Throughout the ten weeks interns will report to their job placement sites for four days and spend one day attending the Latino Leaders Fellowship Institute every Wednesday.  Final decisions on placements and intern assignments will be made no later than May 1, 2006.  Applications are due no later than February 28, 2006.

An additional scholarship opportunity is also available through a partnership between CHPRD and PSE&G for those students entering their junior year upon completion of the summer internship.  More information on this scholarship is available by contacting the CHPRD at (609) 894-3223.
